Not every person with a nail condition is a candidate.

Candidacy requires examination of the nail, the surrounding skin, circulation, sensation, and relevant medical history. A portion of natural nail must be present, because the material does not bind to skin.

The manufacturer lists situations in which KeryFlex should not be used, including:

• Peripheral vascular disease
• Arterial insufficiency
• Peripheral neuropathy
• A suspicious pigmented nail lesion
• An ingrown toenail

Manufacturer materials also advise avoiding it during pregnancy or nursing and in patients with a known sensitivity or allergy to its ingredients.

The procedure uses a bonding agent, composite resin, a curing light, shaping, and a sealant. The material is bonded to the remaining natural nail and shaped to resemble a toenail, and the remaining natural nail can continue to grow.

Alternatives include evaluating and managing the underlying nail condition on its own, or leaving the nail untreated cosmetically while the condition is addressed.
